Blessings and Curses on a Nation
There are certain clear, immutable things with God. One of these regards nations, both how they respond to Him, and what occurs in relation to their response.God spoke through Moses in Deuteronomy 28 to record this for us:
“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God: Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.... But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God ... these curses will come upon you and overtake you” (vv. 1-3, 15 NASB).
These promises and warnings are specifically for Israel. But the principle of this relates to every nation that has ever existed. If you resist this thought, then scan history itself. It has always proven true.If you follow God, there is always blessing; if you ignore and resist God, you will be seeking to build a nation without Him, and that never works. In fact, the proud will always be resisted by the One who made us for His own purposes.
Let’s Get Personal
Read Deuteronomy 28—fully, prayerfully—and think about our nation. Read the paper, watch the television; step out of your Christian cocoon and observe the land. The signs of our rebellion are legion. In the minds of the discerning, it is only the result of the spiritual remnant in our land that forestalls the final judgment of God upon us.God will make no exceptions about us as a nation. He never has. His longsuffering is great, but His judgments are sure.We are a young, seemingly invincible nation. So was Egypt. So was Rome. So was England.Read the Bible. And mourn. And repent. And pray for a mighty, nationwide revival and spiritual awakening. And keep praying. It is still our only hope.
