Are Police Officers Inherently Racist?

Recent news reports suggest some law enforcement officials are acting with racial prejudice. Here’s my take.To begin with, there is this notion afoot that people in government are inherently worthy of wielding the sword of the state because somehow they are immune from the sin nature the rest of us possess. But the reality is that people in government are sinners like the rest of us. Are ordinary people subject to greed, deceptiveness, lust, and prejudice? Well, surprise: so are people in government! That’s why our framers established a system of checks and balances and separation of powers. (By the way, as a matter of trivia, do you know where in the Bible our framers learned about the concept of separating the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of government? Find the answer at the bottom of this posting.)Getting back to healing police/citizen relations, the best solution remains for us to have a great spiritual awakening. Why do I say this?Take the Welsh Revival at the turn of the twentieth century, for example. As a result of God’s powerful influence on that nation, crime in Wales dropped so much that police had virtually nothing to do. So they formed singing quartets, traveling around their towns and ministering to crowds. Imagine a scene like this: “We need music; call the police!”We can try to pass laws and force every police officer to wear body cameras 24/7, but in the final analysis, it won’t ever be enough, because those monitoring the police and those on grand juries are sinners too! We desperately need heart change! We need to keep praying for a mighty move of God to bring healing to our land.[In answer to the question above, look at Isaiah 33:22 (NIV): “The Lord is our judge [judicial], the Lord is our lawgiver [legislative], the Lord is our king [executive]; it is he who will save us.”]
